Fighting for not-So-Religious souls: The role of religious competition in secular conflicts.

Many countries embroiled in non-religious civil conflicts have experienced a dramatic increase religious competition recent years. This study examines whether increasing between religions affects violence or secular conflicts. The focuses on Colombia, deeply Catholic country that has suffered one of the world’s longest-running internal and, last few decades, witnessed an intense Church and new non-Catholic churches. estimation dynamic treatment effect model shows establishing first church municipality substantially increases probability conflict-related violence. is larger for by guerrilla groups, concentrated municipalities where establishment leads to more competition. Further analysis suggests associated with expectation among groups their membership will decline as consequence followers.
